Overview of the P-8A Observation
On November 18, 2016, during a mission in the Eastern Mediterranean, a P-8A aircraft observed an unidentified low-flying object approximately 55 nautical miles northwest of Latakia, Syria. This observation occurred while the aircraft was monitoring the activities of the KCTG. The unidentified object was reported to be traveling at a speed of around 500 knots on a southeasterly trajectory, indicating a significant level of velocity and potential maneuverability.
The interaction lasted for about two minutes before the object became unobservable. The mission commander characterized the encounter as safe, suggesting that, despite the object's unidentified status, it did not present any immediate threat to the aircraft or its operational objectives. This incident marked the first recorded observation of possible missile activity by a P-8 aircraft in this region, although it was assessed to align with the typical activities associated with the KCTG.
