A declassified CIA media-monitoring report captures a 26 January 1993 Moscow broadcast describing a 'saucer-like' aircraft called BKIP, developed at the Saratov aviation factory — while the reporter noted that 'the meeting with a UFO did not take place after all.'
Within a June 1991 U.S. monitoring digest of Soviet broadcasts, one line item notes an 'anon on ufo sighting by two estonians' — a fleeting anomalous report buried among coverage of elections, arms talks, and economic reform.
A merged reading of declassified CIA Foreign Broadcast Information Service media-monitoring products released through The Black Vault, centered on the 21 December 1990 'TAKEALL' Moscow Consolidated digest (C05516659 / C00174709) and its single crop-circle and UFO listener item, alongside a 1992 TASS report on a saucer-shaped Soviet 'thermoplane.'
Attention! This is secret footage of a laboratory for the production of UFO's... Well, actually, it is something much more prosaic. It is a modern Russian airship, our 'thermoplane.'
A CIA-released FBIS summary of a 1991 Hanoi television broadcast joins a growing set of media-monitoring documents in The Black Vault's CIA UFO collection. Twenty-eight declassified Foreign Broadcast Information Service products in the CIA collection hosted by The Black Vault show how open-source media monitoring handled flying-saucer vocabulary — and how much of the same material had no UFO content at all.
Item 105 of a CIA-released FBIS Moscow Consolidated summary dated 14 June 1991 includes a brief mention of a UFO sighting in Estonia, reportedly witnessed by a milkman and a passenger in his van.
A newly merged CIA/FBIS media-monitoring digest from 26 February 1991 captures one day of Cold War broadcast intelligence — the Gulf ground war, Iraq's Kuwait withdrawal, the Warsaw Pact's military dissolution, Gorbachev in Minsk, and the coming union referendum — with a single passing reference to 'ufo stories' in a Hungarian-language broadcast.
A merged analysis of eighteen declassified CIA-released documents preserved through The Black Vault's CIA collection, including a newly added FBIS media digest from 16 November 1990 that captures the Soviet Union's final months and a fleeting mention of Soviet UFO publications.
A 22 November 1990 FBIS press selection list, released via the CIA, includes a one-line item citing a Soviet officer's disclosure of radar sightings of UFOs around the time of a 15 November rogue surface-to-air missile launch in Amur Oblast.
Item 113 of the 16 Jul 91 FBIS 'Takeall' list includes a 'report on krasnoyarsk ufo sighting (4 min)' within a 'ussr today' broadcast.
Item 53 of a December 1992 FBIS press wirelog reads: Shetland UFO Sighting Prompts Spy Plane Speculation, sourced to The Guardian, 14 Dec 92, p.1.
